How to make Pizza

This isn’t going to make the ‘perfect’ pizza that you’ll get from Pizza Hut…but it’s a great recipe that the kids will be able to bake and you’ll all enjoy and it’s about as healthy as a pizza can get.

I make this most Saturday mornings with my 7 year old. The great thing about it is that you can put whatever you like on the top – and even when it’s the same old cheese and ham – it’s never the same as before. Strangely.

Pizza dough

For one large, 2 medium or lots of small pizzas – this is enough for us to feed 4 people lunch. (Just halve the amount for just 2.)

  • 300g self raising flour
  • 50g unsalted butter
  • 100ml milk – you may need more so keep it to hand.

Pizza sauce

For the sauce you have a couple of options, you can spread some tomato puree over the rolled out base, it works ok but can be a little dry so consider more wet toppings. Better would be passata, better still a pre-prepared pizza sauce.

Make your own pizza sauce

Mix the following ingredients to make a lovely pizza sauce, you can also add in an onion, and even chilli flakes for an extra kick. There’s no rules!

  • a tin chopped tomatoes (blended and sieved) or bottle of passata
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • 2 crushed garlic cloves
  • 1 tsp dried oregano, or any mixed dried herbs
  • 1 tsp
  • generous pinch of sugar
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper

Method

Put the oven on to gas mark 6.

Throw the dough ingredients into the mixer (or knead it until it’s a nice ball of dough).

Roll it out as much as you can/want to and place it on a baking tray. Or you can use a cutter to make lots of small pizzas.

Add a layer of tomato puree/passata/marinara sauce, followed by grated cheese, ham, tomatoes, sweetcorn, mushrooms – just about anything you fancy – just pile it all on.

Cook for about 15 minutes, cut it up and eat.

Fabulous.
