How Will Business Travel Etiquette Change in the Future?

Those that travel often for work are aware of the etiquette that is expected, but could this change as a result of the pandemic? It seems likely that there will be a number of new expectations as a result of COVID-19, at least in the short term as people start travelling once again as the pandemic continues.

Existing Etiquette

So, what is the existing etiquette? Currently, when people travel they are expected to keep conversations to a minimum and at a low level as not to avoid other passengers. Phone conversations should also be avoided if possible and often there are sections of the train where this is or is not allowed.

Another important unwritten rule of travel is to avoid eating smelly or loud food while travelling. This is insensitive to other passengers and it is best to avoid food in general, although obviously, this is not always possible when you have a long commute and haven’t had time for breakfast.

The other important unwritten rule to be aware of is being aware of your music volume. Many people like to listen to music on their commute which is perfectly fine and reasonable, but if you have this so loud that others can hear it, then this is inconsiderate and could be bothering other passengers.

New Pandemic Etiquette

Travel will be changed as a result of COVID and many are concerned about having to use public transport while the pandemic continues. This is why, if possible, you should travel at quieter times, which could help to protect both your own health and public health in general so you may want to look online and book your train tickets for a quieter period.

Wearing a face mask and keeping your distance is also hugely important moving forward – keep in mind that a mask is used to protect others and not just yourself, so you should be considerate of others and wear a mask while travelling on the train. Additionally, you should carry hand sanitiser and wash your hands both before and after travel.

It is always important to be considerate of others when using public transport, but this will be particularly important moving forward. This includes showing respect to staff and listening to any advice that they give you. This is a stressful time for everyone, so make sure that you show respect and play your part.

Hopefully, this post will help you to feel prepared to commence business travel once again. Travel etiquette has always been important, but it takes on added significance moving forward in a time where many are returning to work but numbers remain high. You need to do your best to protect your own and public health by abiding by both etiquette and rules in place.
