Top Tips For Managing Your Business And Family Life
Getting a balance between our work and family life is difficult. About half of people in the UK wouldn’t say they were entirely satisfied with theirs and the issue is more marked in some industries and occupations than others. The Health and Safety Executive even found some workplaces where this balance was a worry for a whopping 97% of the workforce.
It’s something that we all face and, it seems, many of us haven’t quite managed to crack. So, what could you do to help tip the balance in your favour? Here are some top tips to help…
One big calendar
Many of us have a work calendar where we keep track of the tasks we need to complete. We possibly also have a calendar on the fridge for dates of birthdays and events. While it might be nice to think of them as separate, having one single calendar or diary with everything in it can be really useful to striking the right balance. That way, you can ensure you don’t allow yourself to ‘double book’ and keep work dates and commitments clear of important dates in your family life.
Renovate a room
Do you regularly take work home? More than four million people are said to do at least some work from home and many more than that at least check their emails remotely thanks to the capabilities of modern technology. Doing this work in your living room does nothing for your work/life balance as it blurs the lines between the two. Transforming one of the rooms into a home office is a great way to separate the two. If cash is an issue, you can always consider a home equity line of credit or even a home improvement personal loan. There are several online lenders that can help you get the cash you need, such as Avant Credit.
No-go areas
Following on from that, try to have some rooms that are ‘no-go areas’ for work. That means no emails in the bedroom when you should be concentrating on sleep and, ideally, no work on the settee when you should be spending time with the family. Be strict with yourself, the balance you’ll get is worth ‘winning’.
Don’t put yourself under undue pressure
You need to accept that we’re not living in an ideal world and sometimes you won’t be able to be in control of every aspect of your work or family life. Learn to let some things go. If the ironing piles up a little bit or the front room needs a vacuum, don’t push yourself to do it when you’re tired after a long day at work. Let things wait until you’re ready so that you’re in charge of your chores. Getting a balance right also means knowing your own limitations and sticking to them.
Shop online
People who are extremely busy at work finally manage to get some ‘family time’ during the weekend and this time is precious. If you’re pushed for time with your family, don’t waste it by trekking off to the supermarket. Handle this – and other shopping orders where possible – online so that you free up your non-work time for the family.
