Black Friday – what’s it all about?
The New year sales are an age old tradition that people would wait for with great anticipation but wait! There’s a new ‘day’ in town, that’s growing into a phenomenon. Whereas the New Year sales have become to be regarded as the time when retailers sell off the old stock to make way for the new, Black Friday is the one to watch now, being towards the end of November it’s perfectly timed to grab some Christmas presents, still leaving enough time to pay full whack if you don’t get everything cut price on that one day.
This year Ebay alone is anticipating 9m visits from Brits on Black Friday buying wait for it, 25 items every second.
Last year’s Black Friday saw more than £800m online consumer purchases.

Lucy MacDowell, owner of Double-Flip, a toy store selling unique and fun reversible toys and gifts is participating again this year, after experiencing a sales boost in 2014:
“We did an offer last year and found it gave a good boost to sales and also got people to look at the site and shop later, so definitely worth doing. Every one is busy, and Christmas shopping is now on the ‘to-do’ list but not yet ‘must-do’. Veronica Anosiri from Shea Innocence is joining Black Friday for the first time, she’s dropping prices of her stunning soy candles and body butters by 20%.
Having only starting her business this year, Veronica is looking forward to testing this opportunity.
Top tip for Black Friday
Remember that although it’s a great idea, don’t forget to tell people about your sale. Use your database to tell past customers, get on social media and create your own back Friday graphics. Share other people’s Black Friday deals and use it as an opportunity to gain social media likes and shares.
When is Black Friday?
It’s an American thing and traditionally takes place after thanksgiving. This year Black Friday falls on November the 27th. Sales generally start at midnight or at opening hours but as with everything else it’s becoming earlier and earlier and will spread throughout the week eventually.
I imagine Amazon will be the first to start it off… before Friday – let’s see.
